Wouldn’t it be great to have a ton of people on social media sharing pictures of your product? One of the best ways to get your product featured is by growing your brand’s following. If you want to build your brand while selling your product on Amazon, you also need to honor their Terms of Service (TOS). When you consider sending insert cards to your customers, you need to make sure you aren’t directing them away from Amazon and directly to your store. All right, so before I do jump into that, I did want to say this is a big, big discussion, not just insert cards but really terms of service when it comes to Amazon, and this is why I am stressing that you build external channels, not just sales channels but traffic channels.
Speaker 1: 01:37 And that can be an email list. That can be website traffic, that can be some Pinterest traffic, whatever that is. You always want to diversify because Hey, you may think that you're doing things right. Amazon says, nah, I don't think so. Or they're just going to do it because they can. Uh, you do not want to fall in that, in that little Amazon trap. All right, so always protect yourself. All right, so like I said, this question came in from YouTube. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to pronounce the name.
Speaker 1: 02:23 It's a que Paso I think is what it is. Um, and, and probably not the, uh, the actual name, but came in from, from YouTube and I am going to read it right now. It says, Hey, amazing seller. Now that we are in 2020, I wonder if it's still accepted to ask customers to post pictures on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter in the insert. Is it, I plan to design a small business card with this strategy, but can't find anywhere. If Amazon tolerates it, could you help me? Thanks. I absolutely can. Uh, Capasso I think that's how you pronounce the name. Uh, but here's the deal. Okay. First we got to talk about what you're actually going to be doing here. All right? So if Amazon, if Amazon looks at your insert card and says, it kind of looks like you're trying to take people away from the platform and sell your stuff, then you're probably doing something wrong in their eyes.
Speaker 1: 03:20 Okay. Now let me just also say here, uh, you need to do what feels right for you. Because I can say what I'm doing and say, I think that it's okay, but we don't really know, okay? I've seen people do everything by the book and then they just, you know, they have a slap come their way or I have a claim come their way, even though they have a path and even though they have a trademark. So I've seen that happen. So I can't say for sure. But what I would say, and this is what Chris Schaffer now it says a lot. If it passes the mom's test or the mom test. And what that basically means is if your mom would say, you really shouldn't do that, Johnny, you know, that's not what you're supposed to do. If you are thinking along those lines, probably shouldn't do it.
Speaker 1: 04:06 One example of this would be, Hey, we want to make you happy. If you leave us a five star review, we'll make you happy and send you a free product. I've seen that by the way, that is totally violating terms of service, okay? That is what we call black hat too, by the way. Uh, that isn't even great. That is black, okay? It specifically says in the terms of service, you cannot, you cannot incentivize people to leave a review, okay? Now, some have said, and we've even done this ourselves in the past, is where it says, Hey, we would love to hear your feedback. Can you head over to Amazon and let us know how we did? And that's it. We don't say, leave us a five star. I've also seen people say, Hey, uh, if you would take a picture of yourself and give us a five star and post it on wherever, Instagram or Facebook or Amazon, uh, then we will give you something.
Speaker 1: 05:02 We will give you a, you know, a discount or we will give you a $20 Amazon gift card, like any of that stuff. Whenever you are saying that you want a five star review, whenever you say that you're doing it wrong, like I would not ever ever suggest doing that. I just just don't do it. Okay. You heard it here. Do not do that. Now, some creative ways that you could use an insert card and I don't believe that Amazon would have a problem because again, I'm using common sense here, but I don't know, sometimes Amazon doesn't even have common sense. All right. But I would think it'd be okay. What if I put in my insert card? Uh, Hey, if you want to join our VIP club where we'll give you discounts on future products, go here. And if they go there, they're going to get Amazon discount codes.
Speaker 1: 05:56 If Amazon is smart, they would be okay with that because we're driving people back to their platform. That is what they want. They want people to come back to their platform. So I would think that would be okay. Now to your question, you're not even asking about reviews or you're not even that because you really didn't give me that in the question you really just said, you know, is it still okay to post pictures on Instagram? I don't think there's anything wrong with saying, Hey, we want to hear from you. Do us a favor and post a picture of yourself with your new skateboard and uh, or take a video of you doing a trick and posted on Instagram hashtag a skateboarder's life, right? Something like that, right? Like I don't know why they would have a problem with that. Now, here's the other thing.
Speaker 1: 06:43 I tried to look at common sense and I try to look at logic, big brands, Sony, right? For example, they have insert cards all throughout their stuff. They even have stuff that goes that that says go over and check out this webpage where there's a quick start guide or where there's training videos or maybe let's use GoPro as an example. They want you to go and take a clip with your GoPro and then post it in their group to show off their GoPro. And guess what that's going to do for their business. It's going to bring people in because they're going to see the footage and go, wow, what was that footage created with? Oh, it was a GoPro. Oh, I gotta get one. See, so I, I can't see how that can violate terms of service. I think more, uh, of violating the terms of service is if you are requesting a review and a five star review and if you are requesting, uh, for them to leave the, uh, the Amazon platform to buy something.
Speaker 1: 07:43 Now I do think it's okay to give people a quick start guide. I would believe that Amazon would be okay with you giving them something that is going to help them with their purchase. So I would say, well, if you have something that takes looking at how to get set up or how to use something for you to create a little resource, a video, a PDF, I don't see how that's a problem for you to say, Hey, go to a skateboarders club.com forward slash tricks or quick start or training or videos, right. Whenever you want to put on the end of that. I don't know how that would be a problem. Like why would that be a problem? You're giving them more of what they just purchased. Now where this would be wrong would be like, Hey, go here to get a discount on your next skateboard and you send them to your Shopify store with a discount code that doesn't go through Amazon.
Speaker 1: 08:40 I could see that as being a violation. So again, sometimes we just gotta use common sense and you know, sometimes you'll do something and you'll think you're doing it okay and you'll get slapped and then you're going to, it's usually a warning, right? It would be like, yeah, you can't do that. You got to stop. But I would say the main thing that you want in this situation anyway is really for people to be able to go over to a webpage, at least for me because here's what we can do. If we direct people to go to that free resource page, that quick start page, here's what can happen. Here's all this stuff that can happen in the background. First off, we get them to land on a page. The minute they land on that page, I have a Facebook pixel installed on that page. Boom.
Speaker 1: 09:23 Custom audience, whether they opt in for an email or not, boom, they landed on the page from Amazon. They just purchased, they went there, they, they're on my page. Boom, I've got them custom pixel. Now I have a custom audience built of a customer. Okay cause they came from that insert. I know they're a customer, right? So a little tip there for you. If you want to build a custom audience, not even an email list yet, we'll get there. Then create a page, a landing page as we call it, and then put a Facebook pixel on that page and then you are pixeling that audience and that audience is customers because the only way they got it was from an insert. Okay, so that's what I would do there. Second part of that I beat the second part of that would be, can't even talk, I'm getting so excited is is I would put an opt in form.
Speaker 1: 10:11 Okay. A landing page that has a capture form and that would be first name, email address. Right? And all you're doing there is you're like, Hey, register to get access. Right? That's all you're saying is put your name and email address in to register to get access to the VIP area, the training area, the quick start guide, the warranty, whatever. Right? So now we've pixeled them one, two. We've got their email address now from the next part of this is we can then follow up with these people because once they sign up to get these training or this video or the quick start guide or whatever, we can then follow up with them through email and say, Hey, thank you so much for grabbing their free resources for your new skateboard thing, wheel, whatever. And um, we just wanted to know if you had any questions, let us know.
Speaker 1: 11:03 And Oh by the way, there's a couple of other free resources here. Here they are. I'm not selling anything at this point guys. That's the mistake that a lot of people are making is they're instantly going from going it from an insert card to making another sale. Now, yes, if it was my own platform, I could do that and I would do that. But because we're, we're kind of a plane in a, in a dangerous area here, we gotta be careful. But if you'd get them on your email list or you get them on a custom audience, you can always follow back up with an offer and Amazon's not going to go and trace that step all the way back. And I don't think they could do anything anyway. But again, that's just my opinion. That's my thoughts on it. I think it's brilliant to get people who are using your product and posting them on Facebook and Instagram or Pinterest or wherever your market is hanging out I think is brilliant because then you can take that and you can put a screenshot of that on your sales page or your product page to show that people are using it and they're enjoying it.
Speaker 1: 11:59 And that's the best testimonial you'll ever get. All right. So that's what I would do. Hopefully this helped you. Anyone else watching or listening, make sure that you really ask yourself, would my mom approve of this? Is this a, is this a little, uh, you know, going a little gray hat here. Is this going a little black cat here? You know, all right. And I would not risk it. So take what I just shared with you, do what you will, but again, just think about it, but it is a great opportunity for when a package shows up and you can put something in there that can give them more resources or get them over to your webpage or you can start to build a relationship and then also target those people later.
